Vincent van Gogh lived in thirty-seven different residences over the course of his life, which ended abruptly at thirty-seven years old. Searching for a place to call one’s own was a running theme in the artist’s life. He moved from town to town and job to job, in pursuit of meaning and tranquility. It was during his move to Arles in southern France that he finally found a sanctuary and painted his masterpiece, The Bedroom (1888; Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam).
